Fresh Squeezed Lemonade
There’s nothing quite like a glass of fresh squeezed lemonade on a hot afternoon. Made with just three simple ingredients, this classic homemade drink comes together in minutes and delivers the bright, refreshing flavor that has made fresh lemonade stands a favorite at fairs, festivals, and boardwalks for generations.

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade
One of the first places I head whenever I visit a local fair or festival is the fresh squeezed lemonade stand. I enjoy it so much that it earned a permanent spot on the menu when I owned my food truck. It was always a customer favorite, and the best part is that it’s just as easy to make at home.
Whether you’re cooling off after working in the garden, hosting a backyard barbecue, or simply craving something cold and citrusy, a tall glass of this homemade lemonade really hits the spot. The perfect balance of sweet and tart flavors let the fresh lemons shine, creating a drink that’s far more refreshing than anything you’ll find in a bottle or powdered mix.
Homemade beverages are one of the easiest ways to make the most of a from-scratch kitchen. If you’re looking for other refreshing summer drinks, be sure to try my homemade blueberry lemonade, classic Arnold Palmer, and fresh squeezed orangeade too.
Recipe ingredients
- Lemons: Fresh, heavy lemons with smooth, brightly colored skins will produce the most juice and the best flavor. Avoid bottled lemon juice, which lacks the bright, fresh taste that makes homemade lemonade so refreshing.

How to make fresh squeezed lemonade
Step 1: Pour 2 cups of the water and the sugar into a small saucepan. Place over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has completely dissolved. Do not allow the mixture to boil. Remove from the heat and let it cool to room temperature before pouring it into a large pitcher with the remaining water.
Step 2: While the syrup cools, firmly roll each lemon on the countertop using the palm of your hand. This helps break down the membranes inside the fruit so you can extract as much juice as possible.
Step 3: Cut the lemons in half and juice them directly into the pitcher through a fine-mesh strainer. The strainer will catch the seeds and pulp while allowing the fresh juice to pass through.
Step 4: Remove the seeds from the strainer and scrap the lemon pulp into the pitcher. The pulp adds fresh citrus flavor and gives the lemonade its classic homemade character.
Step 4: Stir the lemonade well until al of the ingredients are fully combined. Taste and adjust with a little more water if you prefer a milder lemonade.
Step 5: Fill serving glasses with ice and pour the fresh squeezed lemonade over the top. Garnish each glass with a lemon slice if desired, and serve immediately.
Top tips
- Keep Everything Well Chilled: For the most refreshing lemonade, refrigerate the finished pitcher for at least 1 hour before serving. Cold lemonade tastes brighter and stays cold longer when poured over ice.
- Stir Before Serving: Natural lemon pulp settles as the lemonade rests. Give the pitcher a quick stir before pouring each round of glasses to distribute the pulp evenly.
- Freeze Lemonade Ice Cubes: Freeze some of the lemonade in ice cube trays and use those cubes when serving instead of regular ice. They’ll keep each glass cold without diluting the flavor.
- Substitute Honey: You can substitute 3/4 cup of mild-flavored honey in place of the sugar in this recipe if you prefer.
- Use the Best Water: Water is the main ingredient in lemonade, so its flavor matters. I use fresh well water, which has a clean, natural taste. If your tap water is chlorinated or has a noticeable flavor, use bottled spring water for the freshest-tasting lemonade.

Fresh Squeezed Lemonade
Ingredients
- 6 cups water separated
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
- ice for serving
Instructions
- Combine 2 cups water and the sugar in a small saucepan. Heat on medium-low, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves completely. Remove from the heat and cool to room temperature.
- Pour the cooled syrup into a large pitcher and stir in the remaining 4 cups water.
- Roll the lemons on the countertop, cut them in half, and juice them through a fine-mesh strainer into the pitcher.
- Remove the seeds from the strainer and return the lemon pulp to the pitcher.
- Stir well to combine.
- Pour over ice and garnish with a lemon slice, if desired.
Notes
- Freshly squeezed lemon juice provides the best flavor. Bottled lemon juice is not recommended.
- Chill the lemonade thoroughly before serving for the most refreshing flavor.
- Stir before serving, as the lemon pulp will naturally settle to the bottom of the pitcher.
- Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- For a honey-sweetened variation, substitute ¾ cup mild honey for the 1 cup sugar and dissolve it in the warm water as directed.
