Upcycled Handmade Valentine Napkins
Upcycled handmade Valentine napkins are a simple way to dress the table with something personal and playful, using only what you already have on hand. Made from repurposed fabric, and finished with a whimsical lip appliqué, this sewing project adds a Valentine’s Day accent with handmade details that truly shine.
You can pair this with other simple seasonal ideas that you find in my crafting a heartfelt Valentine’s Day post, like baking a Persian love cake for two, or making a simple felt heart garland for a cozy, intentional celebration.

Let’s talk about this project
I love projects like this because they don’t try too hard. The napkins are straightforward to make, practical enough to use year after year, and still have a big dose of personality stitched into them.
The lip appliqué is intentionally simple, and when it’s sewn onto the napkin panel it naturally puckers just a little — which only adds to the charm. It’s a small detail, but one that feels perfectly suited to Valentine’s Day. Pucker up!
If you’re planning a Valentine’s Day celebration meal, you might enjoy setting them alongside dishes like portobello mushrooms with shrimp scampi stuffing, savory Tuscan shrimp, or jam-filled heart thumbprint cookies.
Materials you’ll need
- FREE pattern: Download my FREE lip appliqué pattern to get started.
- Fabric for napkins: Four 13″ x 13″ squares of upcycled cotton, linen, or muslin that press well and hold their shape through regular use.
- Fabric for appliqué: Two 4″ x 7″ pieces, cut from upcycled print or solid fabric, scraps are great for this.
- Sewing thread: Thread that matches the napkin fabric, so the seams blend in and don’t compete visually.
- Embroidery thread: Selected to complement the appliqué, and define its shape, without overpowering it.

Equipment you’ll need
- Craft scissors: Used strictly for cutting the paper pattern so fabric scissors stay sharp.
- Fabric scissors: Reserved for cutting napkin panels and appliqué fabric accurately.
- Sewing machine: For sewing the napkin panels together with a consistent seam allowance.
- Sewing pins: Used to secure the pattern, position the appliqué, and align the napkin panels before stitching.
- Hand sewing needle: For stitching the appliqué in place with control and precision.
- Iron and ironing board: Essential for pressing seams, setting corners, and giving the napkins a clean, finished look.
How to make handmade Valentine napkins

Step 1: Use the paper pattern to cut the lip appliqué from the appliqué fabric, keeping the shape clean and accurate so it sits neatly once stitched.
Step 2: Pin the appliqué to the right side of the napkin panel, placing it comfortably in from the edges so there is plenty of space between the appliqué and the finished seam.

Step 3: Hand sew the appliqué in place using matching embroidery thread, keeping stitches small and consistent, and allowing the fabric to pucker slightly, as it naturally will.
Step 4: Place an appliqué panel and a plain panel right sides together, then pin around the perimeter to keep the layers aligned while sewing them.

Step 5: Sew around the outer edge with a ½″ seam allowance, leaving an opening for turning, then trim the corners carefully, without cutting into the seam allowance, to reduce bulk after turning.
Step 6: Turn the napkin right side out, gently shape the corners, press flat, then sew around the edge using the presser foot as a guide to close the opening and give the napkin a clean finish.

Diane Gail’s tips for success
- Position thoughtfully: Place the appliqué comfortably in from the edges so that the placement on the final piece doesn’t feel crowded.
- Let the fabric behave naturally: Don’t fight slight puckering of the appliqué as it’s sewn onto the napkin — it’s normal with hand stitching and adds character to the finished piece.
- Keep stitches consistent: Small, even hand stitches give the appliqué a clean outline and hold up better through regular use and washing.
- Press with care: Take time to press the napkins well before topstitching them, so the edges stay crisp and square.
- Use scraps confidently: This is a great project for using up smaller pieces of fabric, which keeps it firmly rooted in slow, upcycled homemaking.
