Fresh Guacamole Recipe (Made at Home with Simple Ingredients)
This fresh guacamole recipe shows you exactly how to make fresh guacamole at home using simple ingredients to create well-balanced flavor. Creamy avocado, sweet grape tomatoes, spicy jalapeño, and a few well-chosen spices give it depth and a clean, finished taste. Whether you’re serving it with chips or adding it to a meal, this is the kind of guacamole that holds its own every time.

Nothing beats guacamole made fresh
I first learned to appreciate avocados while spending time in Puerto Rico, and not long after that, I learned how to make guacamole from a young friend in her home in Philadelphia. Two very different places, but both shaped how I think about this simple dip. Every time I make it, I find myself right back in those kitchens — and honestly, it still feels just as good now as it did then. Realizing I hadn’t shared it here on the blog felt like something that needed to be fixed.
Guacamole like this fits right in with the kind of dips I come back to again and again — simple, made from scratch, and built on real ingredients. If you enjoy this one, you might also like my Italian sausage party dip, warm bacon blue cheese dip, or homemade pico de gallo salsa. They each bring something different to the table, but they all follow that same idea of letting a few well-chosen ingredients do the work.
And when it comes to serving, you don’t need anything complicated. A good cracker goes a long way here. Everything crackers made from scratch, homemade pepper jack crackers, or rustic savory crackers all hold up well and have enough structure to scoop the guacamole without breaking.
Recipe ingredients
All ingredients for this recipe are shown in the pic below and special notes are made in this bulleted list to assist you.

- Avocados: Use Haas avocados for their consistent texture and flavor. They should give slightly when pressed with your thumb — soft enough to mash easily, but not overly soft or sunken.
- Grape tomatoes: These bring a natural sweetness that rounds out the flavor in a subtle but noticeable way. Choose firm, smooth-skinned tomatoes with no wrinkling.
- Jalapeño pepper: The amount can be adjusted depending on how much heat you want. As written, this recipe is very mild, but you can increase or reduce it to suit your preference.
- Cumin: A key spice in this recipe that adds depth and a warm, earthy flavor. Use a fresh, aromatic cumin for the best result.

How to make fresh guacamole

Step 1: Slice each avocado in half lengthwise, remove the pit, and scoop the flesh into a bowl. Mash with a fork or potato masher until you reach your preferred texture — slightly chunky works well here so the finished dip has some structure.
Step 2: Add the pressed garlic, fresh lime juice, cumin, salt, and pepper directly into the mashed avocado. Stir until everything is evenly combined, making sure the lime juice is fully worked through to prevent browning and to evenly season the mixture.

Step 3: Finely dice the grape tomatoes, red onion, and jalapeño so they distribute evenly throughout the dip. Keep the pieces small and consistent so you get a little of everything in each bite.
Step 4: Fold the diced tomatoes, onion, and jalapeño into the avocado mixture. Stir just until combined — enough to distribute the ingredients without overmixing, which can break down the texture too much.
Top tips
- Let it sit briefly before serving: Give the finished guacamole 10–15 minutes to rest so the flavors can settle and come together more fully.
- Adjust the lime at the end: After everything is combined, taste and add a small squeeze of lime if needed to brighten the overall flavor without overpowering it.
- Add cilantro if you enjoy it: Finely chop a small handful and stir it in with the spices for a fresh, herbal layer that complements the avocado.
- Keep the surface covered: Press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole to limit air exposure and slow browning before serving.
- Use a non-reactive bowl: Mix the guacamole in glass or ceramic rather than metal to keep the flavor clean and unchanged.
